Archibald Scott McCulloh 1797-1871

McCulloh-Archibald S d1871 (Brother of Mary Ann Lewis) (1L)

Archibald Scott McCulloh was born on March 16, 1797 in the Little Cove, PA. He was the firstborn child of John and Elizabeth McCulloh. He married Catherine Myers on October 8, 1819. They had ten children: eight boys and two girls, all born in the Little Cove. Three of Archibald and Catherine’s sons and a son-in-law fought for the North in the War Between the States. Archibald and many in his family were captured by the confederates and spent the night as prisoners when General Imboden invaded the Little Cove on June 27, 1863. Their livestock and many possessions were confiscated and afterward Archibald reflected that “We can honestly say we have lost heavily by the rebels.” Their grandson, Harry A. McCulloh, fought in the Spanish-American War. Archibald died on June 11,1871 at the age of 74. He is buried beside his wife among many other McCullohs in the Methodist Episcopal Church graveyard in the Little Cove. The verse on Archibald’s tombstone is the first verse of the hymn I Would Not Live Alway. Interestingly, the second verse appears on his wife’s (Catharine McCulloh) tombstone.
